Making a List for 2012, Checking it Twice

December 28, 2011

It’s that time of the year again to make your resolutions for the New Year.  Below are a few proposed resolutions from your concerned healthcare attorney.

  • Find out what the heck Medicare’s Version 5010 is and make sure your practice has it in place by January 1, 2012, or make sure  you have submitted your “transition plan” so your claims are not denied.  Click here to learn more.
  • Review my documentation with my biller and/or (preferably) a coding expert to make sure its complete and matches what I bill out. Contact us if you need a referral to a coding expert.  No better way to protect yourself against recoupment demands than to take preventative measures….  If you are aware you are billing improperly, take measures to correct!
  • Sit down with my biller and discuss whether we are maximizing recovery of our account receivable.  You may be surprised how much your practice may be leaving on the table…
  • Review my co-pay procedure to ensure the practice is making our “good faith effort” to balance bill.
  • Check to make sure my privacy policies are up to date and that my staff is utilizing/implementing same appropriately.  Contact our firm if you require updated policies or in-practice training.  Also, use computers?  Make sure you have a security policy in place.
  • Review my existing relationships with vendors, marketing companies, web designers, etc.
  • Make sure none of the medications at my practice location are expired, and that the order forms for same match prescriptions/usage.
  • Double check we’re current with all inspections.
  • Review my marketing materials to make sure I don’t have any potential violations under misconduct laws.
  • Be more proactive about reaching out to the medical community to ensure I’m in tune with the many coming changes to our healthcare system, reimbursement, billing, coding, etc.
